PEC Elections 2011

New districts and guidelines in place for election

At the 2010 Annual Representative Assembly, a resolution was passed approving a redistricting proposal that saw a number of locals reassigned to form three new geographic districts: Central, Central South and Edmonton McMurray. Consequently, the districts of Central West, Edmonton and North East were made obsolete, and the number of locals comprising some of the other districts was altered.

The changes to the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s geographic boundaries will be in effect July 1, 2011, but apply to candidates and voters alike for the 2011 Provincial Executive Council election.

How do the changes apply?

  • Each successful nominee for district representative will run for elected office in the district to which their local was assigned as a result of the redistricting.
  • Members intending to vote for district representative(s) in the election may want to confirm the district to which their local was assigned as a result of the redistricting, although that information will appear on the election ballots.

Changes to election practices

Geographic districts aren’t the only area to see change this election year. As a result of recommendations that were put forward by a committee struck to review the Association’s provincial election practices and approved by Council, a number of new guidelines related to campaigning and campaign financing are in place as well. Candidates will find the guidelines in the Call for Nominations package mailed to schools November 30, 2010. (A pdf version of that package is also available on the Association website at www.teachers.ab.ca).
